Apicoectomy

Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy may be necessary when inflammation persists in the bony area surrounding the tooth after a root canal.

Once numbed locally, our endodontist starts by opening the gum tissue to see underlying bone and to remove infected tissue. The very tip of the root is removed at this time. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. Over the next few months, the bone will continue to heal around the root. Following apicoectomy, most patients resume normal activities. Our team will extensively discuss post-operative instructions with you.
